A switch is more intelligent than a hub. It is selective about where it passes data.

A switch electrically and logically connects together 2 or more devices. The Switch then  manages the flow of data across a network by transmitting data packets only to the one or more devices for which the data packet is intended. Each network device connected to a switch will have its own network address, commonly referred to as its IP address allowing the switch to directly control the flow of traffic. Unmanaged switches are plug and play devices and do not require any user intervention to configure them. Newer  unmanaged switches may have a web interface to allow access for any changes to be made. A managed switch gives the ability to configure the switch and to prioritize LAN traffic.
