A fibre interface converter is a network device that enables connection between two dissimilar media types, for example, twisted pair cables and fibre optic cables. They were introduced in the 1990s, and are important in interconnecting fibre optic cable based networks with existing copper based systems. Fibre media converters support different data communication protocols including Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, as well as multiple cabling types and various Field bus protocols including but not limited to Profibus, Modbus, Genius and FIP as well as RS485 and V.24.
